Riot Games has confirmed it is hard at work on a huge update for League of Legends – one that’s set to shake up the game completely.
Riot Games has just put the cat out of the bag – they’re working on a massive overhaul for League of Legends after all the rumour-mongering that started with Bloomberg reporting that the company was busy remaking the whole thing. Back in November, a Chinese esports insider even went so far as to claim that League of Legends 2 was on the cards, set to be released as early as the second half of 2026. But in a video release outlining Riot’s plans for the game’s future after 2026, executive producer Paul Belleza roundly denied the League 2 rumours but admitted the developer was indeed working on a pretty big update that’ll see the light of day in 2027.
Later on in the video a conversation between the Head of League Studio, Andrei van Roon, and Paul Belleza showed some of the big ticket items on the table – a whole new client to be integrated seamlessly into gameplay, an all-out visual revamp for Summoner’s Rift, changes to the Runes system and a wide ranging aim to make the overall player experience better. The update, it seems, is going to be as big as the one they did back in mid 2010s when they gave League’s graphics a massive reboot – and hopefully will bring in some fresh blood to the game.
Belleza and van Roon promised to share more in the run-up to MSI in the summer and Worlds in the fall of 2026. While the exact timeline is a bit vague, the window of opportunity for this sort of update is probably the last week of November to early January, when competitive leagues have a bit of a break.
