Pro-Russian hacker group steps up as DDoS attacks French postal service

The group calling itself Noname057 has a history of causing a ruckus across Europe with various high-profile attacks.

According to Reuters, Noname057 has come out as the main culprit behind a nasty DDoS attack on the French national postal service La Poste that went down on December 22nd. The distributed denial-of-service attack effectively took down La Poste’s central computer systems, causing a right old headache for the postal service in the run-up to Christmas – when it’s hard enough to get stuff delivered on time without having to deal with hackers of this sort.

As of Wednesday morning, the cyberattack on La Poste was still causing problems – it wasn’t all sorted yet. To be fair, it didn’t seem to have any impact on the usual letters going out the door, but it was enough of a nuisance that postal workers were having trouble tracking packages & online payments through La Banque Postale – the service’s banking side – were being disrupted.

A lot of people know Noname057 by now, as it’s been linked to a string of big cyberattacks in over a dozen countries. Yes, Ukraine has indeed been a prime target for Noname057 – and by extension, Ukraine-friendly countries.

Europol has been going after the group with everything they’ve got since this summer & the US Justice Department has also been taking action against the group.
