WhatsApp has recently announced that it will be updating the privacy policy for the Indian market due to which it landed into controversy. The previously changed privacy policy asked the user to accept the changes or stop using the App. It caused a serious backlash for WhatsApp and the matter was also checked by the government agencies. Although the privacy policy acceptance from WhatsApp was delayed from February 8 to May 15, it does not seem to provide any relief to the company.

The company does claim that the policy acceptance will not affect the privacy of individual chats, it is indeed opening avenues for businesses to get user details to offer personalized experiences. The company has already updated that the update is mainly meant for businesses using its messaging platform. Accepting the policy changes will only share their phone numbers and transaction data but it would not impact how people communicate with friends or family. The company has also confirmed that end-to-end encryption for the messages will remain and no one except the users will be able to access the messages.

The company made an official statement about the same in which they said, “The information we share with the other Facebook Companies includes your account registration information (such as your phone number), transaction data (for example, if you use Facebook Pay or Shops in WhatsApp), service-related information, information on how you interact with businesses when using our Services, mobile device information, your IP address, and may include other information identified in the Privacy Policy section entitled ‘Information We Collect’ or obtained upon notice to you or based on your consent“”. Also, their FAQ page mentions some details about what would happen if you do not agree to the policy changes, “For a short time, you’ll be able to receive calls and notifications, but won’t be able to read or send messages from the app“.

The smartphone dominance battle between Samsung and Apple has been going on for years both companies have been open about it. Although Samsung has always had an upper hand in the market, being the biggest manufacturer, the iPhone has been able to gain quite an advantage after the launch of the iPhone 12 series. The iPhone 12 series is one of the most talked-about smartphones this year and also one of the best-selling smartphones for the company till now.

According to a report by Gartner, Apple has emerged as the biggest smartphone brand in the world. As per the reports, Apple was able to ship almost more than 80 million iPhone 12 smartphones in the last quarter and the figure is more than any other brand in the market, including Samsung. The reports also reveal that it is the first time since 2016 that Apple has surpassed all the other smartphone brands. During the previous quarter, Apple saw a growth rate of 14.9% while

Samsung saw a fall of 11.8%.

So, it would be probably right to say that the sales of both iPhone 11 and 12 series for Apple have done quite well globally. As per the reports from Gartner, “The launch of the 5G iPhone 12 series helped Apple record double-digit growth in the fourth quarter of 2020.” Gartner also mentioned that the fall in sales for Samsung was due to the tough competition that the company had to face from regional smartphone vendors like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo as these brands grew more aggressive in the global market.

WhatsApp has been facing a lot of backlash in the Indian market after they changed the privacy policy and it was made a mandate for the users to use the apps. After so many issues, WhatsApp has finally announced that they will be updating the privacy policies again and the update will soon be made public. The company has also revealed that they have conveyed to the Indian government its commitment to protecting personal communications in India.

As per their official statement, “Due to misinformation and based on feedback from our users, we have pushed back the timeline of acceptance of WhatsApp’s terms of service and privacy policy to the 15th of May. In the meantime, we continue to engage with the government and are grateful for the opportunity to answer questions that we received from them. We’ve also included more information to try and address concerns we’re hearing. Eventually, we’ll start reminding people to review and accept these updates to keep using WhatsApp. As a reminder, we’re building new ways to chat or shop with a business on WhatsApp that are entirely optional. Personal messages will always be end-to-end encrypted, so WhatsApp can’t read or listen to them.”

Epic Games makes a new complaint in EU antitrust regulators against Apple

It has been a long while since Epic Games and Apple have been under the legal battle for removing Fortnite from the App Store on the usage of the payment system by Epic Games. Although there has been no such relief for Epic Games in this matter, they have now decided to take it a step above. The Fortnite creator Epic Games has taken its fight against Apple Inc. to European Union antitrust regulators, ramping up its dispute with the iPhone maker over its App Store payment system and control over app downloads.

The company has been in a legal dispute since last August and Apple has blamed Epic Games for trying to avoid Apple’s 30% fee on the in-app purchase. To this, Tim Sweeney, the Chief Executive Officer of Epic Games replied, “The 30% they charge as their app tax, they can make it 50% or 90% or 100%. Under their theory of how these markets are structured, they have every right to do that, Epic is not asking any court or regulator to change this 30% to some other number, only to restore competition on IOS,” he said, referring to Apple’s mobile operating system.

Now the European Commission, which is already investigating Apple’s mobile payment system Apple Pay, has confirmed the acknowledgment of a new complaint by Epic Games and has confirmed that they will access it based on the standard procedures. Epic Games has also made a complaint to the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal and to the Australian watchdog on the same matter and many other companies have openly supported Epic Games in this matter.
